Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to your questions about selecting, installing, using and maintaining epoxy and polyurethane floors.
Choosing a Coating System
What is epoxy flooring and where is it used?
Epoxy flooring is a thermosetting resin coating formed by the reaction of a suitable epoxy resin with a hardener selected for the intended substrate. It provides strong adhesion to prepared concrete, metal and wood surfaces.
İZOKİM Yüzey designs and installs the appropriate coating system according to service loads, chemicals contacting the surface, mechanical traffic and other variables.
With over 20 years of experience and a specialist team of engineers and technicians, İZOKİM Yüzey designs, manufactures and applies coatings for factories, warehouses, storage and production tanks, treatment plants, steel structures, roofs, car parks, hospitals and sanitary facilities. Systems are tailored to requested functions, including high chemical and mechanical resistance, antibacterial properties, UV resistance, antistatic performance, corrosion protection, water, heat and sound insulation, non-flammability, slip resistance, aesthetics and gloss or matt finishes.
What is polyurethane flooring and what is it used for?
Polyurethane floor coatings are usually thermosetting resin systems formed by reacting polyols with isocyanates. Depending on formulation, they can provide flexibility, impact resistance and underfoot comfort. They are used in production areas, commercial spaces, sports floors and, with suitable system selection, outdoors. Not all polyurethanes have the same UV or heat resistance. Aliphatic topcoats may be selected for colour and UV stability; polyurethane-cement systems are a separate product group for different service conditions.
İZOKİM Yüzey selects and applies polyurethane or epoxy systems to meet customer requirements, particularly on floors requiring movement accommodation and flexibility.
What is an acrylic topcoat, and why and where is it used?
An acrylic topcoat is generally the final acrylic-based layer, providing colour and protection against external effects. The term does not describe one product type: one-component acrylic coatings and two-component acrylic polyurethane topcoats have different properties.
İZOKİM Yüzey uses suitable acrylic-based topcoats over epoxy, polyurethane and other systems to provide UV and outdoor resistance with a glossy appearance.
What is the difference between self-levelling and multilayer epoxy?
Self-levelling is a high-gloss coating type, approximately 3 mm thick, that flows to form a smooth surface. Multilayer systems use multiple resin and inorganic mineral layers to target high performance at lower thicknesses.
İZOKİM Yüzey assesses specific customer requirements and operating conditions to design and apply the appropriate system.
Which flooring system should be selected for forklift traffic?
Forklift loads, turning and braking points, pallet dragging and impact risks are decisive. Heavy-duty, slip-resistant multilayer systems with a high inorganic mineral content and a thickness of around 1–1.5 mm are generally preferred.
İZOKİM Yüzey designs the layer build-up for long service life and customer requirements, considering concrete strength, moisture and filling needs at joints, cracks and other defects.
Application Process
How long does epoxy / polyurethane flooring installation take?
The schedule depends on area, concrete condition, repairs, layer count and temperature. Preparation and coating generally require 4–5 working days; large or phased projects take longer. Finishing application does not mean the floor is ready for heavy traffic. Pedestrian use generally requires 24 hours of curing, while forklift traffic and chemical exposure typically require around 7 days.
With its large team and continuous working schedule, İZOKİM Yüzey takes over floors on Friday evening and hands them back ready for use on Monday morning, including on large projects.
Can epoxy be applied to damp or new concrete?
Concrete must have developed adequate strength and meet the moisture limits of the selected coating. As new concrete has high moisture, waiting around 3–4 weeks will extend coating life by 3–4 years.
For urgent work and floors with foundation waterproofing issues, where capillary action draws moisture from the ground during rainy weather, İZOKİM Yüzey uses moisture-tolerant epoxy hardener systems derived from processed cashew nut shell oil to design and install long-lasting coatings even on high-moisture concrete.
Can coatings be applied over an old coating or cracked concrete?
First, inspect the existing coating's adhesion to concrete, oil and dirt contamination, cracks and joints. Unsound layers must be completely removed mechanically and, if needed, chemically. Even small remnants of an unsuitable coating can greatly reduce adhesion and cause the entire new coating to lift. Applying over an existing coating requires assessment by engineers with substantial technical expertise.
İZOKİM Yüzey's experienced engineers assess the existing coating and design and apply an optimised system.
Care and Use
Are epoxy floors hygienic?
Correctly installed, intact and regularly cleaned epoxy surfaces make hygiene management easier. Low porosity, a continuous coating and high surface tension reduce dirt retention and aid cleaning. Wall junctions, coving, drains and movement joints must also be detailed appropriately to prevent dirt accumulation. Not every epoxy is inherently antibacterial or suitable for direct food contact; relevant product test and conformity documentation must be assessed where these properties are required.
Using appropriately certified antibacterial products, İZOKİM Yüzey coats floors, coving and skirting and walls up to 2 m high to create a fully coated basin-like enclosure, producing coating systems compliant with ISO 22000 and international food safety standards.
How should epoxy floors be cleaned?
First remove sand and particles that could scratch the surface using a brush or vacuum. Then clean with compatible, correctly diluted chemicals and a soft pad. Clean oil and chemical spills promptly. Strong acids, alkalis, solvents, abrasive pads and high-temperature cleaning should only be used if the system's resistance has been confirmed.
İZOKİM Yüzey supplies maintenance and cleaning instructions with its coating systems and provides the necessary training.
How long do epoxy floors last?
There is no single lifespan for all epoxy floors. Concrete strength, preparation, thickness, mechanical movement, impact and chemical loads, maintenance and, above all, system selection and application determine service life. Even the best products can lift completely within weeks if applied incorrectly.
İZOKİM Yüzey provides a minimum two-year statutory guarantee for all applications; completed applications have service lives exceeding ten years. Reference installations can be shown on site at the customer's request.
Are epoxy floors slippery?
Slip behaviour depends on texture, water or oil, footwear and cleaning conditions. Suitable inorganic minerals and topcoats can create slip-resistant surfaces in wet or oily areas. Rougher surfaces have different cleaning needs. The target should be defined for the use scenario and, where necessary, an appropriate test method.
İZOKİM Yüzey agrees the required slip-resistance level with the customer using sample panels.
Can epoxy floors be used outdoors, and do they yellow in sunlight?
Standard epoxy systems may show colour changes and chalking in sunlight within 6–12 months.
İZOKİM Yüzey designs non-yellowing, non-chalking coatings using systems and topcoats suited to outdoor conditions.
Quotes and Planning
What determines the price of epoxy flooring?
Concrete condition, preparation, repair quantities, thickness, number of layers, chemical and mechanical resistance requirements, markings and symbols affect cost. These variables are needed for a reliable quotation.
İZOKİM Yüzey offers free surveys and samples to help customers receive accurate information and appropriate pricing.
Can installation take place while the business continues operating?
Phased work can be planned where suitable. The work zone must be separated from operations for dust, odour, access and safety, while ventilation and curing periods are respected. Sensitive activities such as food production may require extra precautions and shutdown planning. The feasible schedule is determined during the survey.
İZOKİM Yüzey works continuously to minimise downtime, starting coating on Friday evening and handing over on Monday morning.
Can colours, walkways and pallet areas be planned together?
Yes. Floor colours, pedestrian and forklift routes, pallet spaces, symbols and warnings are planned with the facility's traffic and 5S layout. Together with the customer on site, we agree colours from our RAL chart and pallet, machine and equipment areas, walkways, forklift routes and special symbols suited to the site plan.
